Top SUVs to Get You Through Winter
That dreaded time of the year has finally arrived. Just when we thought that we could possibly get out of this winter practically snow-free, we’re hit with the biggest storm of the season. All we needed were a couple days of snow to remind us of the harsh, wintry struggles we endure living in the WNY area. Here are some of the best SUVs that can help to make getting through these months a bit easier.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
While the Grand Cherokee will please fans of adventure and off-roading, it is also one of the best SUVs to get you through the wintry conditions. The Jeep Grand Cherokee's entry-level Quadra-Trac I system offers four-wheel traction without the need for a low-speed transfer case will please winter drivers. The Grand Cherokee offers a refined ride with an upscale interior and all of of the necessary cold weather amenities.

GMC Yukon
The Yukon features availability of a 4WD or AWD system and its power is derived from a 5.3-liter V-8 engine that generates 355 horses and 383 lb-ft of twist, managed by a six-speed automatic transmission. This spacious 9-passenger vehicle will provide enough power to get you through the toughest conditions.
Nissan Rogue
The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivers dependable power through all four wheels. A few features do help boost the Rogue’s winter credibility. Active Ride Control helps the car smooth out a bumpy ride, and Active Trace Control uses the brakes and torque to help with cornering. The Rogue offers 3rd row seating, which makes it a reliable vehicle to get your family through the hazardous conditions.

Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V delivers a reliable ride that has made it become one of the most popular crossovers in the country. This holds true when driving through wintry conditions. The CR-V’s AWD system might not make it the best option for off-roading, but it safely handles any winter conditions it might encounter.

Subaru Forester
The Subaru Forester’s all-wheel drive system will claw through the snow and maintain control in just about any accumulation on the road. The drive system allows a certain amount of wheel slip while climbing, helping to keep the Forester’s momentum throughout a harsh winter drive. The Forester offers both an affordable and reliable ride.

Toyota RAV4
The RAV4’s all-wheel drive option is well worth it for the inclement weather capability, sending power to the rear wheels as needed. The available limited-slip differential allows a certain amount of wheel spin to pull the vehicle out from difficult situations. It has been reliably one of the best small SUVs for the winter season for many years, and continues to make improvements.

Honda HR-V Named 2016 Green SUV
When you think “green” and “vehicle” your thoughts may not rush to SUVs. Normally, we think of tiny automobiles as most fuel efficient. The Honda HR-V is a perfect pairing, however, of styling, smart features and fuel economy leadership, according to editor and publisher, Ron Cogan.
Ron has been leading Green Car Journal for many years. The magazine was first published in 1992 and since that time its mission has remained focused on two areas: automobiles and environmentalism. In fact, the journal hosts events throughout the year to educate consumers on more environmentally sound automobile options. Some of these are ride and drive events, where clean fuel vehicles are test driven by interested drivers.
The award is an honor for Honda, which has won three from Green Car Journal in the past five years.
At West Herr Honda, we hope that you’ll stop in soon for to browse. We have a great selection here in Lockport, New York, of both new and pre-owned vehicles.
If you’re not in the market for a new vehicle right now, we encourage you to stop in anyway and check out our tidy service center. We would be happy to take care of your next needed repair or maintenance need.
Concept Cars of 2016
With the Geneva Motor Show right around the corner, we thought that we’d take a look at some of the concept cars that this year has offered so far. These vehicles help to expand new, innovative features such as automatic driving capability and a bold use of 3D printing for modular parts. Whether these vehicles come to life in the future or just remain innovative ideas, these bold concepts prove that the manufacturers are ready to explore new territory and expand the boundaries of the automotive industry.
Buick Avista Concept
This concept may signal a different direction for Buick’s front end styling. Flowing, uninterrupted lines blended with advanced technical and surface details define Avista’s interior. Leather and aluminum trim surround the driver and passengers, and reinforce the precision of the performance-oriented driving experience. The Avista offers turbocharged performance with an 8-speed automatic transmission and 3.0L twin turbo V6. This new style could be a major step in establishing the brand’s relevance with a younger generation.
Nissan Titan Warrior Concept
This burly beast looks like it’s ready to conquer anything. The super-sized, off-road modified design shows an aggressive new style for the truck market. The all-new Titan XD already has a lot to offer with its Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine, but this concept takes the all-new Titan production version to the extreme. Jose Muñoz, executive vice president of Nissan Motor Co., states, "While Nissan still has many roads and trails to travel as we continue to launch additional production versions of our bold new Titan, this new Titan Warrior Concept gives an important signal to American truck enthusiasts that our vision for exploring new boundaries remains strong.”
Honda Civic Hatchback Prototype
The Civic hatchback will be previewed in prototype form at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Little information has been released regarding this prototype, but from this single teaser shot we can see that the Civic Hatchback will feature similar styling to the latest Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe models. The teaser indicates a sleek and sporty style for this prototype. We will have to wait a few days to see the official unveiling of this vehicle.
Kia Telluride SUV Concept
Kia could be bringing back a large, rugged SUV back into its lineup. Not long ago, they released the Borrego; due to the financial crisis and high gas prices, the SUV was dropped back in 2010. The Telluride sports a giant grille, multiple-LED headlamps, and 22-inch wheels. The steering wheel, dash, and door panels were built via 3D printing, indicated a future direction automakers are headed with modular parts.
Subaru VIZIV Concept
After its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, the VIZIV has offered excitement for the Subaru brand. The name VIZIV is derived from “Vision for Innovation”. The vehicle includes automatic driving functions and other advanced safety technology. The vehicle features an all-wheel drive platform and Subaru’s signature hexagonal grille. The VIZIV actively controls the front/rear driving force distribution, improving maneuverability. Its technologies include automatic driving capability, which aligns with Subaru’s ongoing evolution of the Eyesight driver assist system.

Spring Checklist for Your Vehicle
Despite us lucking out on a generally mild winter, our vehicles have still taken on a lot of damage during these months. As a "thank you" to our vehicles for helping us survive the harsh winter season, we should always perform a spring checkup to make sure they're in top-notch shape for the (hopefully) warm months ahead!
Here are a few things you should be sure to check off the list:
Leftover Salt Removal:
Besides the fact that it's nice to see what color your vehicle actually is after it's clean, leaving leftover salt on them can cause serious damage. This is especially true in their under-compartments where the metal can rust. Make sure the car wash that you bring your vehicle to has sprayers that can clean all areas of your car.
Alignment & Suspension Check:
We all know that dreaded "clunk" when you drive over those unavoidable potholes in the road. They can really do a lot of damage to your car's alignment and suspension. If the car pulls to one side, that might be an indicator that you have a problem. Keeping your wheels aligned will help to get your vehicle on the road in a safe direction.
Battery Check:
The cold conditions can really wear on your battery. It works a lot harder and can become easily drained in the winter. Winter stress can compromise their performance up to 60 percent. Signs that you might need to replace your battery are dimmed headlights or interior lights. Not properly checking your battery could lead to a costly tow down the road.
Belts and Hoses Check:
Inspect and replace worn or cracked belts and replace hoses that are brittle or too soft. If a belt is broken, it could result in the loss of power steering or an overheated engine. If belts and hoses are older than five years, they might need to be replaced, even if they appear to be intact.
Brakes:
Having brakes that function properly is essential to your vehicle. We rely heavily on our brakes, and wintery conditions and salt can lead to corrosion of brake parts. Our anti-lock braking systems especially get a workout through the winter months. Some trouble signs that you need to get things checked are your vehicle pulling to one side when you hit the brakes, a grinding/squealing noise and when the petal feels too soft.
Fluid Levels:
Spring is the ideal time to flush your transmission fluid. If this is neglected, it can lead to a very costly repair. You also want to check your windshield washing fluid levels, as well as your brake and cooling system fluids. A brake fluid flush can get your brakes working as good as new and is recommended at least once a year.
